After School Program Teacher
The Breakthrough Providence After School Program aims to develop critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills and to provide opportunities for students to explore talents, passions, and interests. Centered around a singular theme that is social justice oriented, students explore the topic through different creative lenses (i.e. contemporary art, literature and writing, etc.) Past themes have included exploring the Black Lives Matter movement and “Justice For All? Elections and Taking Political Action.” In the fall, students rotate among teaching teams to learn about the theme through each of the creative lenses. In the spring, teachers support students through extension projects that express their understanding of the theme. These projects may take a variety of forms, such as performances, infographics, visual art, and written pieces.

- Main duties: As an After School Program Teacher, you will work with a partner to team teach our middle school students. With guidance and direction from teachers, students will design a community-based project to take action around one of the focus areas they examined during Explorations in the fall. In the spring, over the course of 6-7 weekly sessions, students will design, assemble, and execute their project in the community, culminating in a public presentation to the community on Expressions Day. Your role as an ASP Teacher will involve the following responsibilities:
- Meet and collaborate with your team teacher to plan weekly lessons for classes of 12-14 middle school students.
- Review lesson plan edits from your mentor teacher's feedback and revise as needed.
- Support students to plan and create final projects and present their work to the community.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Approximate # of Hours/Week: 3-5 hours per week
- Required days/times of the week (if any): Wednesdays from 3:30pm-6:00pm, planning time (varies, but usually 1-2 additional hours per week)
- Semesters this position is available for: Entire Academic Year (September 2016- May 2017)
- Qualifications: The ideal ASP Teacher is a high school- or college-age student looking to gain leadership skills and teaching experience in our “students teaching students” model. Previous teaching experience is not required.
